120 YEARS WITH LAVAZZA: SPRING RACING CARNIVAL

This morning I was lucky enough to have a sneak peak into the Birdcage at Flemington Racecourse and boy can I tell you already it is something spectacular! Each year the marquees pick up their game and take us on an unimaginable adventure through their theme of choice. One of my favourite and marquees would have to be that of Lavazza, who this year are celebrating 120 years of Classic Italian Icons, at the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival. They are consistent in what they produce and are always the talk of the town, bringing a real taste of Italy to our home soil.

To celebrate the big ‘120,’ this year Lavazza will partner with the creme de la creme of industry experts, including The Block judge and Vogue Living editor Neale Whitaker, renowned artist and Archibald winner, Vincent Fantauzzo, and Melbourne’s Tonka and Coda Restaurant head chef, Adam D’Sylva. I mean with a combination of these mega-talents under their belt, what do you expect from the coffee superstars? As usual, Lavazza is bound to exceed all expectations, with the “wow” factor really being turned up a notch.
During the four day carnival, the birdcage marquee will transcend guests into a beautiful contemporary space full of the Lavazza brand shade, Blue. Designed and styled by Neale Whitaker, the marquee will celebrate six masters of Italian mid-century design representing the legacy of their work. From the geometric floor tile design by the 19th century multi-talented Gio Ponti, to the 1969 Up series armchair by renowned architect and designer Gaetano Pesce, the iconic designs will be surrounded by a cloudscape generated by Vincent Fantauzzo and inspired by contemporary Italian design studiopepe.
The highlight of the marquee will be original artwork created by Vincent Fantauzzo. Widely recognised for his award winning portraits, together with cloudscape, Vincent will exhibit a mural that perfectly compliments the tones and style of the interior whilst incorporating elements of each of the six italian designers.
Drawing from her Italian heritage, dessert queen Silvia Colloca will create mouthwatering desserts for marquee guests including almond crust mini tarts with Lavazza coffee and dark chocolate ganache, and mini cannoli filled with marsala spiked ricotta, mascarpone and blueberries.
Responsible for the savoury items, Adam D’Sylva whose passion for food came from his Italian mother and nonna, will create a bespoke menu with mouth-watering creations including seared tuna and truffle crostini, quail egg and pancetta brioche bun, chicken saltimbocca with spiced faro as well as nonnas gnochi with heirloom tomatoes.
Finally last but not least, back by popular demand, Lavazza will have a ‘coffee window’ built into the side of the marquee with two baristas from D.O.C serving Lavazza coffee to guests all day long, whilst general admission racegoers can enjoy Lavazza espresso’s at coffee bars throughout the track between 10am – 11am daily.
