Sitting front row at the opening runway for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia shedding a tear. Sounds like something is not right doesn’t it? However, everything was right. More than right…it was brilliant. One may think that happy tears brought about from clothing is crazy, and I too would agree….but it was not crazy when it came to the circumstances, and those circumstances were Toni Maticevksi. His designs are not just clothing. They are not just pieces amongst others in a wardrobe. They are art, beauty, and the star of one’s closet.
It really is impossible to comprehend how one man alone can create such a range of beautifully structured masterpieces time and time again. Not only do they look incredible on the runway, but importantly they are wearable, with each and every piece fitting like a glove on any body shape, providing the perfect silhouette for all who wear his designs. No wonder he has solidified himself as an, if not THE, industry leader in Australia and Internationally. Not just a designer, but an inventor, a mastermind, and Australia’s answer to Haute Couture.
Held at Sydney’s upcoming gem, the picturesque Cutaway at Bangaroo Reserve, Maticevski hosted over 1000 VIP industry guests for what was to be a sensational night. The scene was set perfectly with a shiny white runway featuring elevated gold and silver mirrored platforms, surrounded by sky high rock walls.
Taking a show-stopping approach to showcasing his Resort 2017 collection, Maticevski opted for a collaboration with Australia’s answer to Alexander McQueen, Sydney jeweller, Ryan Storer. Turning the glamour factor, handmade jewels accompanied the garments down the runway in the form of crystal ‘gobstoppers,’ crystal encrusted handcuffs, and the real jaw dropper, the bejewelled crystal body chain. Wow is all I can say. We all know I can never get enough bling, so this was heaven to my eyes and soul. Who knew bondage could meet High fashion! Well played Maticevski, well played.
The seventy-two piece collection exhibited pieces of all kinds. Sexy draped bustiers, strategic pleating and gathering, layered ruffles, and of course the ever-so-adored Maticevski full skirts made their welcomed appearances. The volumous skirts reflected a womans’ clarity through airy volume that suspends dream-like gowns and skirts that gently kiss the runways floor, defying the pull of gravity. We saw stiff fabrics, waxed linens, visible zippers (my Maticevski favourite), and mesh netting, as well as sweeping gowns and micro bonded pleats presenting as a perfect fit for the graceful and distinguished woman. All in an array of soft neutrals, pastels, metallics, and a hint of orange, the collection was everything that comes to mind when the name Maticevski is referenced. Elegant, romantic, and sophisticated.
Oh and one cannot complete a wrap up on the divinity of the Maticevski show without making a much needed reference to the head-turning, showstopping silver shimmering mid length number. Talk about woman in shining armour. Always bound to appear are a few shimmering pieces in a Maticevski show, and this was the icing on the cake, showing that a Maticevski lady is not only classical and beautiful, but a woman capable of taking on the world.
Reducing a venue of 1000 guests to silence and only gasps of awe, Maticevski did Mercedes Benz Fashion Week proud as the opening designer. Not just MBFW, but the guests, his supporters, and the fashion industry in its entirety. Maticevski is keeping our standards where they should be – sky high, and continues to grow as one of the most sought after designers in the world.
